So here’s the thing, I originally applied for medicine but have gotten a place at university for Biomedical instead as my grades weren’t as good as needed (A-bio B-chem C-phys).

The original plan was I take biomed for 3 years and postgraduate medicine for 4 years.

But I found Optometry in clearing and researched it, and to be honest, I have become more interested in it, at the moment I’m quite confident that i can get into the optometry course in the same uni.

Im also attracted to the fact that going for Optometry will cut my stay in the uni by 4 years! However, torn between the thought of having regrets in the future for not pursuing my original intention to study Medicine.

Optometry.
benefits: less study time and so, faster getting started with your carreer, settled down, im not sure, but ive been reading and i think its an easier course, only 8 uni does the course so less graduates and more job availability. interesting study.
disadvantages: potential regret for not doing med. the work itself currently sound boring. inevitable less financial reward than doctors.

Medicine
benefits: its the path i always wanted to pursue, interesting study AND work, high demand graduates globally, obviously higher financial reward and sense of achievement.
disadvantage: 7 years stay in uni minimum, i’m scared that i will struggle and the course becomes too difficult for me and i regret not taking the easy option, it will take longer for me to settle down and start my career.

(just to name a few)

I’m really really torn in two right now, and it would be helpful if you can help me and give me some advice :) please take into account that I am very much interested in studying both courses, just that in Optometry’s case, I’m not really hooked into working in a high street opticians everyday.. doing the same things.

Thanks :)
